PUSH BUTTON HOUSE
I think this is a famous coffee place similar to Starbucks. This "Push Button House" is also quite famous. Go to "Art" then "Project" then "Push Button House". Picture on the right was borrowed from LikeCool.com.
IT'S THE ULTIMATE "OPEN HOUSE": illy Push Button House.
illy collaborated with artist/architect Adam Kalkin to create a dramatic work of living art - the illy Push Button House, a five-room home with a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, living room and library constructed within a standard industrial shipping container. The home, which transforms at the push of a button, is created from recycled and recyclable materials and is the physical representation of illy's dedication to sustainability, art and innovation. Guests to Push Button House had the opportunity to sample the world's finest coffee using illy's new iperEspresso system, participate in coffee classes, view dance and performance art and listen to caffè conversations. Push Button House debuted at the esteemed Venice Biennale in June 2007. In December 2007, Push Button House was exhibited in New York City where it welcomed holiday shoppers at the Time Warner Center. As part of the New York Wine & Food Festival, Push Button House again took center stage in the Meatpacking District in October 2008. Both pragmatic and environmentally friendly, illy Push Button House is created from recycled and recyclable materials and embodies illy's message of sustainability and its connection to beauty through art and design. From the tin to the taste buds, illy relentlessly strives to turn the coffee drinking experience into one that is also unique, innovative and artful—and the illy Push Button House demonstrates the creative efforts illy employs to reinforce this vision.

JET 5 TON SCREW JACK I think quite possibly these screw jacks could be very handy in elevating a shipping container at a corner or maybe two corners. Even though they are very strong, their base is not very wide and i do not think they would be suitable for all four corners of the container. Picture on the right is of the Jet Model #441305 5-ton SJ Series Screw Jack. One Amazon reviewer has this to say: "Well built, solid, dependable jack, January 27, 2010. I use a pair of these jacks for added floor support underneath my stackable washer & dryer. This jack is solid and sturdy. It doesn't creep down under load. And though I wouldn't say it is "inexpensive" necessarily, it is certainly worth the investment. I am very pleased with the product." By Burleigh Clarke (Norfolk, VA). Please click on the picture at the right to buy from Amazon.com as your purchase helps to support this site at no extra cost to you. Thanks, ~gg
Product Features:
• Contractor quality mechanical jack for all purpose lifts and supports.
• Holds heavy loads indefinitely and will not creep.
• Heavy-duty bell shaped cast base.
• Less effort required to lift capacity load with new design.
• Corrugated steel swivel head turns easily under load.

HOME CONTAINED
This project has taken place in Kansas City, Missouri as reported by kmbc.com a local television station.
A home made of steel cargo containers has taken shape in the Brookside area of Kansas City. The house at 60th and Charlotte streets has 2,600 square feet. The 40-by-8 foot cargo containers are similar to the ones you would see on trains and tractor-trailers, except the ones for the house are taller (highcube). Homeowner Debbie Glassberg is using all kinds of green building materials. Rooftop gardens will produce vegetables while insulating. Steve Mann is part of a grass-roots organization trying to turn yards into a sustainable landscape of plants. Mann is working on Glassberg's front yard. "What we're going to do is put a cover crop on the soil to protect it, stop erosion, and stop weeds from growing," Mann said. Last winter, welders started piecing together the puzzle of steel and concrete made out of cargo containers from China. "It's so unique. You don't ever get to work on anything so crazy and different," architect Christina Assmann said. Glassberg said she is hoping the prototype will lead to a home that could one day help people without a roof over their heads. "I hope to be able to work with FEMA, HUD, and the Salvation Army," Glassberg said. Glassberg said she envisions smaller versions of the home that could be used for housing hurricane victims, homeless people and even college students in dormitories.

GOVERNMENT LIQUIDATION
I used this service in the past to buy government surplus items and tried to sell them on eBay. It was kind of fun for awhile but it got too complicated for me plus the "Big Money" discovered the site and started bidding everything up to the moon. There's a lot of junky stuff; so you really have to do a pre-bid inspection to cover yourself. I notice they now have a "scrap metal" section and that's because much of what they sell has only scrap value. If you decide to try and buy a used shipping container on this site - i would recommend you not buy "sight unseen". A lot of the things for sale are junk. But you can get some good items also. There is always someone who knows how to work the system very well which i don't, but anyway, have fun with those 3000 used bed pans you got for 20 bucks!
Government Liquidation is an online marketplace for the sale of US Government surplus and scrap material to the public. CLEMSON UNIVERSITY SEED
These people are clever designers. They do research on social and ecological approaches to advanced fabrication technologies and testing methods for modifying the containers in order to rapidly and flexibly convert them into dwellings suitable for human inhabitation.
...SEED is an emergent housing investment that appreciates locally over time!
Utilizing an existing surplus of shipping containers and working with industry partners including Container-it, Intermodal Steel Building Units Association, Sargent Metals, and Tri-County Technical, Clemson University designers from the Department of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture are researching and developing an affordable housing solution for the Caribbean Region. Caribbean nations inherently import more goods than they export generating a steady surplus of shipping containers. Shipping containers are designed to carry massive amounts of cargo and withstand extreme weather conditions making them a logical housing component. Completely constructed of steel and reinforced with eight corner post moment connections and corrugated steel walls a 40ft shipping container can carry 67,200 pounds and resist overturn when exposed to winds up to 140 mph. Without modification a 40ft shipping container has 304 square feet of floor space and eliminates problems associated with insects, fire, and hurricanes. With modification a 40ft shipping container can be a safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly home for numerous local inhabitants who would otherwise have less. Designing a process and not an outcome the team has decidedly chosen the seed and its symbiotic-propagation as an analog. Thinking time based and considering logistics the beginning design has emerged as a system of event based solutions capable of providing immediate housing after hurricanes or natural disasters. local intervention and materials eventually developing into permanent and investment with a local identity. Utilizing local skills, labor, and materials the final design is dynamic taking on a symbiotic relationship with the local cultures. Eventually the ubiquitous container is embedded and made permanent providing an investment that can appreciate with time.

GLOBAL CONTAINER PARTNERSHIPS
This organization does projects in at least three countries: Liberia, Haiti & Jamaica. Picture on the right is a school, fashioned from two 40 foot or longer shipping containers by Richard Martin's organization in 2005, now stands in the Haitian town of Gonaives.
To provide the organization and process to respond properly to situations where there are clearly established needs for low-cost, buildings. To instruct and empower the people to undertake the conversion of international shipping containers to meet those needs, and in so doing, develop their own capacities to help themselves in times of emergency and improve their economic condition. GLOBAL CONTAINER PARTNERSHIPS is an organization that has perfected a method and system to economically convert retired international shipping containers into sustainable housing and community buildings such as medical facilities, schools and neighborhood centers. The proven system is based on matching a team of our experts with local citizens to create needed structures, to teach skills to local team members and to aid local economic development. This training and knowledge will better prepare the residents to help the advancement of their own communities while raising their own personal standard of living. The containers, made of steel or aluminum and designed to support extreme loads, are the building blocks of the construction. They may be assembled in a variety of configurations meeting specific requirement of site or community. They allow for the use of unskilled labor in constructing the buildings. They can provide secure space, support second floors and roofs, bridge uneven grades and generally establish the structural foundations for a successful building at costs well below conventional construction. In addition to the conversion, installation and transformation of containers into sustainable buildings; the GLOBAL CONTAINER PARTNERSHIPS team encourages and helps train community residents to take an active role in improving their living conditions, education and neighborhoods.

BOELWERF
I think this container design business does just that: Design and supervise the set-up of container building projects. They don't seem to sell containers - just design and plan and supervise the construction of a building project using shipping containers.
Did you know we could build a Chinese wall out of unused shipping containers that would go around the equator? It's neither efficient nor effective to store them or melt them down. So why not start using them for something else . . .
At Boelwerf we strive to develop structures that are appropriate for the era we live in. We challenge traditional notions of what a building looks like, how it is built, what it is made of and how it performs. Our designs incorporate recyclable and re-purposed industrial materials. Our structures are not high-tech; we like to think of them as appropriate-tech: Always designed with an understanding of the materials and technologies that surround us and with a respect for the resources our planet faces. The global transportation industry responded rapidly to this new invention of the Shipping Container and the rest of the world also began to find more uses for this 'super box', not just for shipping. The new shipping container was so well designed that it could hold tons of cargo inside, but also can easily withstand the weight of 9 or 10 more fully loaded containers on the top of it. ISO shipping containers are the strongest mobile or stationary modular structure in the world. Imagine what people really saw when they looked at a shipping container . . . They began to see, not only a shipping box, but a steel box, cube, building, that was the strongest in the world . . . Moveable, stackable, and easily modifiable. Just like building blocks, the container could be moved, connected and quickly designed to become anything. The options for the use of this new shipping container became endless...

SMALL IS SMART HOUSE
I can sense these peoples enthusiasm for their work with ISBU housing. They live in Australia and have at least one winner of a design. More to come. Stay tuned.
Welcome to our architectural temporary website. It's a template site we picked up from Microsoft Office Live while we are building our new exciting architect's website specializing in shipping container home design. In the meantime, we will keep adding to this site, so please be patient and visit us again! At Architects Fulton + Salomon we think outside the square... but inside the box! And the box is a 40 foot shipping container! At DesignEX 2009, that closed on May 2, 2009, we premiered and released the amazing SMALLisSMART HOUSE! The response was amazing! So much enthusiastic comment from our professional peers about this luxury 1 bedroom house in a single 40 foot shipping container! We designed and built the container home ourselves to show the world that living in a modified shipping container is far from slum living. It has worked! We have created many container based designs for many uses. Think of a use and we can provide you with a design. We have had many enquiries for container based houses providing more bedrooms than the one bedroom SMALLisSMART HOUSE. Over time, if you keep visiting this website, you will find more designs for varying size houses starting with two bedrooms using 2X 40 foot containers. We have recently gained access to up to 54 foot containers which allows us to create a two bedroom house in a 54 foot container for little more money than the 40 foot model! As they get larger, we will extend the designs by spreading 2X 40 foot containers apart and bridging between them with conventional construction. It is a very logical progression. We call this style of house the DOGTROT HOUSE. (The Dogtrot house was described by Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn: "It was a double house, and a big open place 'betwixt' them was roofed and floored".) We don't only work with single shipping container houses. We have designed a 650 sq.m. residence and 6 unit bed & breakfast facility to be built at Orlando, Florida using 29 shipping containers.

THE 8747 HOUSE A blog documenting the construction process of this interesting shipping container project home.
An account of my adventure to live in a shipping container home on a bluff overlooking the james river.
Back in the planning days of this project, whenever I would politely ask Jason if there was going to be a coat closet by the door or a place big enough in the laundry room where I could put my sewing machine and ironing board, his response was, "This is going to be a different way of living.

SHIPPING CONTAINER HOME
This project is actually located in Australia. It consists of pictures and descriptive text.
"Remote accommodation is always a challenge in difficult terrain. What follows is an example of using two conventional shipping containers to create 90 square meters of living space in dense rainforest adjoining World Heritage Rainforest. The facility, on a nature refuge is used for rainforest research. The terrain is extremely difficult and accessed via a narrow track made by woodcutters in 1928. The techniques are simple and require only very basic skills. They produce a dry, durable ,vermin proof, comfortable, removable facility with a low ecological impact. We cleared the 1928 timber access track by hand using axes and dragging the material, various distances into the surrounding bush. All mature trees were avoided, all stumps cut horizontal at ground level to prevent tire spearing. Standard 6m (20') containers were taken down this trackone at a time, on the back of a small tilt truck, the kind used to carry a single car when they have broken down. These trucks are widely available and cheap to hire. At less than two tonnes the container could be maneuvered down a narrow track between large trees and slid off into a confined area under control, with ease. In extreme terrain the smaller containers could even be dragged shorter distances behind a backhoe. Some internet companies sell wheels you can attach to move by hand or behind a 4WD. In less severe terrain a 40' container might be better value, however the larger container at about 3.5 tonnes would require a much larger truck and a much better road. Unloading would also be a problem. We used two 6m (20') containers placed 3m (10') apart. The site, in Far North Queensland, is situated in dense tropical rainforest. The area has slippery red lateritic clays and gets about 6m of rain per year. The area has many snakes and troublesome white tail rats. It was decided to raise the containers onto 1.5m concrete stumps to keep them out of the wet, to keep them out of the splash and to keep rats and snakes out. We did not try to level the ground as it would break the protective root cover and result in erosion."

ROCK/GRAVEL BED FOUNDATION I have decided to include on this website some information on foundation options for shipping containers. Hopefully, this information will help some of you with setting up your container. It is my personal belief that simple methods are sometimes the best methods for doing something. Using River Rock or Gravel as a bed to set your container on is one of the simplest methods to provide a foundation for your new container. It has been my experience that elevating any metal structure whether it be a galvanized metal water tank or a steel shipping container will add years to it's life. It is important to provide "Aeration" and "Water Drainage" capability under any metal structure, even galvanized metal. So - using something like 1-1/2" river rock or gravel spread out, racked out with a steel garden rake or maybe someone knows how to use a Bobcat or similar equipment to rake out a level surface to place the container on. This is probably a low cost and fairly quick way of providing a foundation for a container. A person could rent a U-Haul trailer to transport rock to their site. I am guessing making a gravel or rock bed about 6 to 8 inches thick to at least 2 foot oversize each side might do the trick. So an 8X40 foot container could probably be served by a rock bed 12 foot wide by 44 foot long. Please consult with someone who has knowledge about this type of foundation system and it's use with a shipping container. Link above takes you to a rock supply business and they have a "Rock Coverage Chart" on their site.

CONCRETE PAD FOUNDATION Take a look at the concrete pad foundation pictured on the right. Now that appears to me to be a very well done foundation. Look closely at the square metal plate placed in between the container frame and the top of the concrete pad. I am guessing these foundation pads were made using plywood forms into which concrete was poured and cured. Depending on the weight of the container contents, a person could probably place one of these pads at each of the four corners of the container. It may not be necessary to have a center or middle support. I worked for a man helping him to set up and level his 40 foot shipping containers and i think we only had the four corners sitting on wood 2X4 cribbing. Pacvan.com says: "The container is self-supporting at the four corners. Therefore, on soft unstable surfaces we recommend each corner casting to be supported with a concrete footing, railroad ties, asphalt or a bed of gravel to spread the weight. This is also very important for container doors to operate smoothly."

CEMENT PIER FOUNDATION This system shown here on the right is a form for a concrete pier using "SonoTubes" which consist of a cardboard like tube made to be filled with wet cement and left to set. SonoTubes are available at most building supply stores including the Home depot. After the concrete sets up you then remove the SonoTube casing (probably by cutting with a sharp knife) and then you are ready for the placement of your cargo container on top of these piers.
“Sonotube® Round Concrete Forms Applications. If you haven't used a Sonotube concrete column mold, you haven't discovered the most economical way to create a diverse range of columns or posts. The Sonotube brand of forming tubes have been the industry standard for more than 50 years. Sonotube concrete forms stand strong as the most economical way to create columns for buildings, entranceways, structural support, light posts and other commercial and residential structures. The superior strength-to-weight properties of Sonotube forms prevent blowouts and may eliminate the need to use a crane during setup. Contractors around the world know Sonotube concrete forms stand strong in their superior technology and value. Because our concrete column mold can be cut-to-size on the job site, it is one of the most versatile construction products on the market. The following list includes some of the more common end uses, but it's not anywhere close to being all inclusive:”
• Columns for residential and commercial buildings and other structures.
• Outdoor sign, light pole and fence-post bases.
• Footings and concrete column molds.
• Stub piers for elevated ramps.
• Flagstones and round steps.
• Theatrical and movie props.
• Super-sized shipping.
• Other concrete column molds.

RAILROAD TIES Using Railroad Ties is something recommended by a lot of people as a base or foundation for cargo shipping containers. Railroad ties come in different grades and some are even made from recycled plastic. I think new and "relay" grade are the best quality you can buy. Relay probably means ties used to "Replace or Re-lay" new tracks. Picture on the right is of Premium Relay Grade railroad ties. I think most hardwood railroad ties are 7in x 9in x 8-½ft long, but can be smaller or bigger in dimensions. It's possible to buy new railroad ties as well as used in different grades. Railroad companies typically replace between 10-15 million wood railroad crossties annually; so there should be quite a few available for sale everywhere. Approximately 3000 ties are used per mile of railroad track. Throughout the North American rail system treated hardwood ties stay in track an average of 30+ years. It appears that selling railroad ties is a business in itself. In other words there are people who do nothing else but buy & sell railroad ties. So i think railroad ties go quite well with shipping containers. For local sources check with your local lumber yard.

BSQ DESIGN Very beautiful workmanship. They seem to do mostly landscaping and this container modification is a kind of sideline, but they do it well it appears.
bsq. Landscape Design can convert and modify standard shipping containers to suit a variety of uses with an almost limitless palette of materials and finishes. Some popular uses for shipping container conversions are as pool cabanas and change rooms, cottage guestrooms, as a small studio or workshop or a Bunkie or a sauna.
bsq. Landscape Design studio has recently reclaimed a 10ftx20ft shipping container for use as their mobile, off-grid professional design office. GREENTAINER
A very good use of glass in building this model home (pardon me, not really a home) from a 40ft long shipping container. These design folks are based in Italy at present, but have worked in many other parts of the world.
"Today there is much talk about the need to use available resources in the most efficient way, to design eco-sustainable buildings and to reduce CO2 emissions through intelligent heating/cooling systems. Greentainer is a project that fully addresses these issues. The starting point was a standard 40-foot (12-metre) container, a HighCube (interior height of 2.7 metres), with a useful life of 5 years before being scrapped. Thus Greentainer is a vessel—a container in the real sense of the word—suitable for multiple uses and destinations, from a small company canteen to a trade show lounge bar, an exhibition room for travelling exhibits and a meeting room; it can be positioned in a park or a courtyard, in an open space or closed area. Greentainer can be easily transported by a container hauler, and there is no need for a construction license. In line with environmental sustainability, the container has been equipped with a photovoltaic system that supplies all the energy necessary to run the heating-cooling system, the lights and other devices. Greentainer is a completely glassed-in structure, open to and integrated with its setting. It gives whoever enters it the sensation of still being outside, in complete symbiosis with the surrounding environment. The synthetic grass floor evokes greenmeadows, while themicaceous colour of the framework makes it almost invisible. Therefore, since its environmental impact is extremely low, Greentainer can be installed at sites with stringent architectonic constraints."

BEIJING CHENGDONG PREFABRICATED HOUSE
This company based in China builds some very nice simple units. In my opinion this is the type of production facility that should be embraced by the government & people of the philippines. With natural resources low and a lack of traditional building material like lumber and plywood - converting shipping containers into housing would be a positive help to Philippino society.
“Beijing Chengdong Prefabricated house Co., Ltd is a professional supplier in the manufacturer of prefabricated building. Established in 1998, due to the management group is made of the experts and business professionals of the industry, the young company has expanded into research manufacturing and property management. Up to now, Chengdong has completed hundreds of projects in 41 countries around the world. Chengdong sell and lease all types of prefabricated buildings. We have developed various types of building specification to suit individual housing requirement. Our various types of building are 9910-A series, 9910-B series, foldable house, Rixin series 2-storey and 3-storey houses, custom-made series. With the modern facility located in Beijing plant, Chengdong has the capability to manufacture 6, 000 m2 a day of quality housing which is equivalent to an annual production capacity of 2, 000, 000 m2. At present, Chengdong has more than 80 qualified and skilled personnel worked on various field installation projects and company. We have earned the confidence of our clients who are concentrated in the Road & Bridge, railway, construction and hydraulic industries. We have helped them with their short and long term housing and accommodation needs and they keep on coming back to avail of products and services. KTAINER
Webpage is gone. I will leave link up for awhile as a place holder - maybe sometime soon owner will replace website. This project appears to me to have lots of potential. It does not look to me that the site or information has been updated recently. It looks incomplete but still presents some good information.
“I am building a cottage out of shipping containers. This project is a tangible study in home technology and sustainable building methods and as such gives focus to my curiosity in these matters. It is my hope that we as a nation of individuals can autonomously create better personal spaces and habits that will stop the acceleration of climate change. I have been saying for more than four years now, "We can change our behavior voluntarily, or we can have it changed for us violently. I prefer the former."
With partners, I own land in a remote part of California. It has wild beauty, and some need of environmental restoration. Our first years there were spent in basic infrastructure such as water and road. To be there on a more regular basis, though, we needed to not spend hours setting up and tearing down a tent each time we visited. My partners built a yurt. I am building a house framed by shipping containers.”

GROUP 41
Based in San Francisco, California. They know how to work with shipping containers, believe me. The picture on the right is of their Utah Containers project. To view more information click on their "shipping container" and "Utah Containers" links at the bottom row of the links list.
"This proposal is a design for market-rate housing in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, Utah. Involving the use of nearly 1000 shipping containers to create up to 200 units of housing, and sitting on a concrete commercial "base" that also includes parking, this major development is slated for a Transit Oriented district near a commuter rail station. Currently, in the preliminary conceptual phase, Group 41 has created two different proposed schemes that take different approaches to the stacking and build-out of the containers. Preliminary local Planning approvals are expected by mid-2009."
"This design solution for a highly sustainable housing solution involves one of Group 41's longtime passions: To design using upcycled Shipping Containers. The project was an International Competition award-winning entry for the "Lifecycle Building Challenge" sponsored by the EPA and Stop Waste.org. The re-use of old shipping containers is an extremely "Green" and environmentally responsible alternative to allowing them to rust in piles on vacant lots. Upcycling the otherwise abandoned resource provides abundant, cheap square footage for housing, at roughly $6 per square foot, delivered to a project site. The containers can be expressed in their raw industrial, more modern state, or "dressed up" in a variety of ways so as not even to look like their original form. In wide use throughout other parts of the world, the US trails virtually every other nation in their re-use."

HOBART 500i PLASMA CUTTER This Plasma Cutter has a high star rating by Amazon.com. I include this unit in here because it will probably do most any type of cutting on any shipping container nomenclature parts available. Hobart also makes and sells a smaller unit called the 250i and it would probably work mostly on the 16 gauge panel of a shipping container (actually designed to cut up to ¼ inch steel). Please click on the picture at the right to buy from Amazon.com as your purchase helps to support this site at no extra cost to you. Thanks, ~gg
“Need to cut steel? Thinking about an oxy/acetylene cutting torch to do the job? Consider a plasma cutter. This simple technology uses an electrical arc and compressed air to cut steel, aluminum, and other conductive metals. The AirForce™ 500i is an economical plasma cutting system for all conductive metals. Inverter-based design and reliable technology pack a lot of performance into a very portable package. This power source adapts to your work site by operating from either 115 or 230 VAC power through standard household outlet using the Multi-Voltage Plug (MVP). Compared to the complexities of an oxy fuel cutting torch system, plasma cutting is easy: Cuts faster than oxy fuel. More precise cut, thinner kerf, less slag to clean up. Smaller heat-affected zone for less warping. No gas pressure settings or flame tuning needed. No preheating of metal prior to cutting. New Inverter Design - Powerful cutting ability at half the weight of prior model (AirForce 400). Weighs only 27.8 lbs. Capable with Engine-Driven Welders - Complete cutting capability when powered by an engine-driven welder with a 240 V generator power outletof 6 kW or more. New Ergonomic Torch - The new HP-50 torch is designed for increased comfort, more efficient cooling and economical replacement cutting tips. Multi-Voltage Plug (MVP) - Allows you to connect to common 120 or 230 V power receptacles without the use of any tools - simply choose the plug that fits the receptacle. Post-flow Air Cooling - Cools the torch and tip after cutting, extending life of replaceable tip and electrode. Fan-On-Demand - Runs only when needed reducing dust/debris pulled into unit. Wind Tunnel Technology - Prevents abrasive dust and particles from damaging internal components. Thermal Overload Protection - Built to withstand tough working environments. Rated for 35% duty cycle at 104° Fahrenheit. Duty cycle will increase as environmental temperature decreases. Cable Management Strap - Secures torch, work cable and power cord to make transporting easy and convenient. Line Voltage Compensation (LVC) - Provides peak performance power under variable input voltage conditions (±15%) for steady and cleaner ending cuts. Power Factor Correction - Expands operator’s work area via extension cords while minimizing nuisance trips caused by voltage drops.”

I thought Textainer was a product of the great state of Texas, but it looks like they are everywhere but Texas. This is a big company, so watch out!
“Textainer has operated since 1979 and is the world's largest lessor of intermodal containers based on fleet size. We have a total of more than 1.5 million containers, representing over 2.3 million TEU units, in our owned and managed fleet. We lease containers to more than 400 shipping lines and other lessees. LAMIDESIGN MODERN HOUSE PLAN BLOG
This is a beautiful blog with many examples of design options using shipping containers as the base material.
“Chronicling the development of new modern house plan designs, prefab house products, and our resurgent modern movement. Yes, today is the day we launch the new portion of our site dedicated to showing our long promised system for building dwellings from shipping containers. Its been a long multi-year journey, much of it documented right here on the blog. Its worthwhile now going back and reviewing where this began. I think my path to this point is informative, and most importantly speaks to how carefully considered this system is. We invite you to click through to read the rest of the history of this journey.”

SHIPPING CONTAINER CONVERSIONS FOR HOUSING-BUILDING SYSTEMS
Another article about using converting shipping containers for human habitation and commercial use. Brought to you by Bob Vila.
"Inter-modal construction means applying many methods - often unconventional ones - for housing and commercial construction. It frequently implies recycling materials for reuse as building components. More than 50 years ago, the US converted steel shipping containers for use as portable command centers and medical facilities in Korea. Now, architects, designers, planners, and homeowners are finding renewed interest in these inter-modal steel building units (ISBUs) as they look for affordable, sustainable housing options for the 21st century."

CINCO CAMP
Another West Texas project involving remodeled used Shipping Containers. This link takes you to the New York Times article.
"Cinco Camp, Roger Black's West Texas retreat, is made of five shipping containers on his 3,000-acre ranch. "I wanted something that blends into the landscape and could be installed and eventually removed with minimal disturbance to the environment," he said."
"The exterior is all steel. The containers themselves are Cor-Ten, the rusting steel used in highway guard rails and Richard Serra sculptures, that never has to be painted. Out in the Big Bend it doesn't rain much, so untreated steel doesn't rust very fast and I figure I won't have to deal with any structural problems in my lifetime anyway."

PFNC
This business converts containers into very nice little homes.
We apologize that homes are currently not available in the United States.
PFNC stands for "Por Fin Nuestra Casa". Translated in English this simply means: Finally, a home of our own. These words are the foundation of PFNC, whose goal is to provide housing to those who most desperately need it around the globe.
PFNC utilizes surplus shipping containers resulting from the United States' consistent trade deficit. These containers serve as the building block of PFNC housing, but go through an extensive conversion process to make them a home. PFNC offers an affordable housing solution that is scalable and fully portable. Each PFNC unit includes 1st world amenities for a price of less than $15,000 (USD). PFNC is a for profit business dedicated to raising the standard of living for families who currently reside in dangerous or substandard conditions. The choice to be for profit was made early on, with the strong belief that it is the only sustainable model that can ensure the largest social impact.
PFNC's corporate performance is measured by its generation of:
1. Responsible Profits
2. Social Impact
3. Environmental Sustainability
Muhammad Yunus the visionary founder of Grameen Bank has coined the title "Social Business Entrepreneur" to describe those social ventures that operate for profit. He states that the point of break-even, . . .is a moment worth celebrating. [the business] has overcome the gravitational force of financial dependence and now is ready for space flight!

ZIGLOO Residential design from British Columbia Canada. Very beautiful examples of what can be made with Shipping Containers. This is a high quality site with some great original material.
“Hi there. I am Keith Dewey - the man behind the Zigloo.ca concept. I moved to Victoria BC after graduating from OCAD 1994. I have been involved in designing over 100 projects... some of Victoria's most celebrated additions, renovations and new homes. Moving to Canada's west coast, from Toronto, inspired me to see everyday living in a whole new light... and this is what Zigloo.ca is all about. A new way to live. My wife, daughter and I make our home (and the Zigloo.ca design office) by the ocean surrounded by mountains on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. CONTAINER CITY
Nicely done website featuring many projects completed using shipping containers as the basic framework from which to build, link together and finish many different kinds of residential and commercial dwellings.
Very interesting and lots of great pictures of their completed projects.
"Containers are an extremely flexible method of construction, being both modular in shape, extremely strong structurally and readily available. Container Cities offer an alternative solution to traditional space provision. They are ideal for office and workspace, live-work and key-worker housing. Container Cities do not even have to look like containers! It is a relatively simple matter to completely clad a building externally in a huge variety of materials. Finally the benefits of Container Cities can truly be seen in short and medium term land use projects. Short-life sites can have Container Cities that simply unbolt and can be relocated or stored when land is required for alternative uses. To date this alternative method of construction has successfully created youth centers, classrooms, office space, artists studios, live / work space, a nursery and retail space."

CONTAINERIST
This website or Blog has much interesting and useful information. It is the creation of one man with one purpose.
“My name is Terry Herb and I am a containerist. What is a containerist? It's a moniker I created for a person who lives inside a container home or at least has the desire to do so (such as myself). Why do I want to live in a container home? It seems to me that there is a statement to be made by living in one—similar to hybrid cars and wind farms. It's a cool thing which impacts the environment in a beneficial way. The port of Los Angeles pictured above is a merely minutes from me. Yes, I am near a mind-blowing sea of shipping containers which seems to cover tens of square miles of precious port property—one of the busiest in the world! Although intriguing, this area is not where I wish to call home. I'm not a concrete jungle kinda person. It's an inspiration zone for me because I strive to leave it all behind for greener pastures. Living in a tiny apartment and being stuck in traffic isn't my cup of chai tea by far. I have lived in the desert community of Joshua Tree here in California for a number of years and I know positively that a home in the country is for me. I need my elbow room. I need a place to create the biggest art sculpture of my life—a container home. It will be liberating in so many aspects. My goal is to take an acre (or more) of generously gifted land in either Southern California away from the city or (ideally) beautiful Arizona and drop down some used shipping containers atop some freshly cured concrete footings, weld it all together and call it my home. Simple enough conceptually, but it has to be a coordinated effort between me and a lot of generous, earth-conscious, green-thinking organizations, businesses and people who wish to see an important project go from dream state to reality. Why important? Because it will set an example of what we can do with the surplus of containers across the world. There is a tasteful approach to utilizing a container which has already served its intended purpose. I am by no means an innovator when it comes to using containers as a place to call home, people are already doing it across the globe, some on a major scale; but this opportunity is for average people from all walks of life to take part in something interesting, challenging and meaningful. I will use my blog as a vehicle to bring the average person into a creative process which they may not normally have an opportunity to be a part of in their every day life; I foresee that many will want to get on board with my project as a way to make a statement of their own, be it big or small scale. There will be lots of pictures and videos to keep all those involved within the loop of the project's progress.”

This might be a fairly good place to consider for buying your next shipping container.
“Storage Containers for Sale!
20 foot and 40 foot ground storage containers are available for sale nationwide. We offer container delivery service to most areas via flatbed or tilt bed trailers. Special purpose containers and customized containers are also available.”
I include this following bit of information because it might be useful sometime.
Shipping Container Conditions Available:
One Trip or Single Use - These are new containers that have had one load shipped in them. By allowing a shipper to use the container for a single load, our cost to position a new container into North America is reduced significantly. These savings are reflected in the price to you.
CW-Cargo Worthy - This quality of container can be used in containerized export shipments. Cargo worthy containers must meet standards of structural strength and be wind and water tight. Containers meeting IICL 5 standards generally are of a better quality than containers showing as just cargo worthy.
WWT (Wind and Water Tight) - This conditional information indicates that the container is dry and suitable for storage.
As-Is - This condition should alert the buyer that there may be damage to the container that could be expensive to repair.
