Container Kit Home MAISON IDEKIT HOME   Using already used shipping containers as a starting point, this company by adding modern materials creates some very nice looking homes - but probably not very low cost comparatively speaking to some other forms of container home construction. This website is also in the French language (I think they are based in Montreal Canada). My link here goes to the English version.

    According to the construction plan, the containers are transformed at the factory, and, after, transported to the construction site. The main principle is to minimise cutting the trees by installing screwed in piles, "Sonotubes" or a bed plate. The containers can be used as foundation for the house when installed on a bed plate and buried; this technique permits concrete savings (money, time, energy), plus protects environment by keeping the trees close to the house. The erection can be done rapidly by putting the containers (which include the roof that was previously assembled) using a crane.   11. Jeff's Planned Home ISBU DEPOT   Take a check at this website featuring this man's plans for his container home. Not a whole lot of information provided but enough for a start.

    This website has two initial goals in mind: Displaying 3d Sketches built using the free tool called Sketchup from Google. These renderings are super easy to create and give the end user a quick view at some of the possibilities for different ISBU configurations. Picture on the right is the home I want to build on a 3.4 acre property I own. As time goes on more subjects may be added. I have always been interested in cookie cutter designs. I live in Houston, TX and started getting interested in ISBU (Intermodal Steel Building Units) ever since I saw that this may be my ticket to building a property in a flood prone area without having to build on traditional wooden stilts. As you will see from most of the sketches I have made, they are all at least one story off of the ground. This would allow for a clearance of 8.5' before any flood waters would enter the main living areas. I still have a lot to learn about the physical construction of these units that is why I am going to try and post as many pictures as possible that I can find of actual ISBUs being created and fabricated. I have called around several places here in Houston and the running average price of a 40' Container is around $2300.00 plus a $200.00 delivery charge to the work site. At $2500 a piece I can quickly gauge how much the raw containers will cost for each one of the sketches I draw. I have now been exclusively looking to use only 53' Jindo containers in my designs as the extra 13' allows for a stronger overall structure and quite a bit of extra sq. footage for only a couple hundred dollars more per container. I may be open to posting user's sketches as well if they should want to try their hand at Google Sketchup with a design of their own they would like to share with others. With this listing i have included some delivery conditions information for your education. Some important details mentioned for those ordering delivery of their container:

    Upon customer request 20ft containers may be delivered on short bed trucks that do not require the maneuvering distances of longer trucks. Unless a short truck is requested in advance, containers are delivered on a full-sized truck/trailer. These vehicles are typically 65 to 75 feet in length and require the following: Flat, solid ground capable of supporting truck, trailer and container. (Rain soaked ground can make delivery impossible). 95 feet straight ahead to pull out from under a 20ft container (less on short truck). 120 feet straight ahead to pull out from under a 40ft or longer container. 15 feet minimum space width and clear height from ground to 16ft during offload procedure (Please call our dispatch office if height clearance is a concern). No 90° or horseshoe bends in road or driveway leading to drop location. Most trucks need about 40ft width available to navigate curves on roads or driveways lined with trees, fences or hillsides. No steep grades at drop off location. Roadway grades greater than 4% are considered steep. Customer accepts responsibility for the freight charges if the driver is unable to deliver the unit where expected (Freight drivers are the experts regarding delivery and as such make the final decision regarding placement of the container). Refusal of delivery at drop off for any reason results in freight charges being assessed. If the driver says he/she cannot place the unit at the customer’s desired location a secondary drop location must be made available or the customer is liable for freight to and from the delivery location. Standard offload time is 45 minutes. Added freight charges may be assessed for excess offload time or mileage outside the city limits of the city indicated by purchaser at the time order was placed.   28. 4X4 Pressure Treated Lumber 4X4 PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER   Another good cargo container base or foundation suggestion is to use pressure treated 4X4 lumber available at most any building supply store like the Home Depot or Lowes. Possibly a couple of pieces at each corner about 2 foot long each piece. If you stack them on top of each other, you might consider placing them at 45 degree angles at each corner so as to reduce the possibility of the container shifting off the base during a high wind. Please be careful when elevating and installing dunnage under these shipping containers because they can shift sideways or collapse on you or your foot or leg, what ever happens to be in the way. More than two people have been crushed by falling containers (mostly on board a container ship or at the dock yard).

  36. Victor LP Regulator PROPANE CUTTING TORCH SETUP   Awhile back i put up a listing of this small business which specialized in container modifications. They used abrasive cut-off wheels or metal cutting blades to cut large panels out of the side of the containers they were modifying. I have used those cutting blades to cut steel and believe me it is a mess. Lots of smoke and noise. These cut-off wheels are great for small jobs like cutting small pieces of steel. But i suspect that using a cutting torch would be a lot faster, cleaner, safer and possibly cheaper. Personally, i have used the propane cutting torch system available from Victor Equipment. I like propane (LP) gas better than acetylene gas. Propane is safer to use than acetylene and a lot cheaper gas to buy. Acetylene produces a hotter flame, but not a big difference in my opinion. My propane torch set-up cut steel like butter. I single handedly cut up a large galvanized water tank with my torch. My recommendation is to put together a system using all propane components. Meaning, use only propane recommended components like hoses, regulators, & tips. I know already - there are those of you out there who use an acetylene regulator and hoses with LP. I'm not that type of person to do that. Using acetylene & oxygen is an expensive combination. Both gases are costly. Propane or natural gas & oxygen can save you a lot of money. You can use any size LP tank and get quantity discounts. Oxygen can be purchased in large quantities (even as liquid oxygen). Then there are those who believe Acetylene Gas is the "Gas" of true macho men while Propane Gas is for sissys who wear pink panties. Or, propane cutting systems are used by "Scrap Metal" recycling yards to cut steel down to short iron and clean aluminum metal from steel rivets and bolts, etc., as if that detracts from the efficiency of the system.

  40. 53' Steel Cargo Worthy Container CONTAINER ALLIANCE   I always thought that you had to use a large crane to move or stack shipping containers. But look at the picture on the right. That is a fork lift with a special lift attachment moving a very large 53' Steel Cargo Worthy Container. What does this mean? It means that for those of you who would like to build a two or three story home out of containers this might be a much lower cost way of getting those boxes stacked at your site rather than having to pay the high cost of a crane. It is easy for a truck to tow one of these fork lifts behind and then use the fork lift to unload and stack as per the container buyers direction. That would be a fast set-up. I bet it would work good. Incidentally, this website has some good information and pictures.

  42. Concrete Pier BASALITE PIER BLOCK WITH WOOD CAP   Probably this tapered pier (solid block) would be suitable for placement under most any shipping container. At the time of this listing they cost $3.74 each at the Home Depot. So pretty cheap - cost less than a Big Mac hamburger and probably a lot more useful. These piers are called 10in piers. Actual Outside dimensions: Bottom 10½in wide, 8in high to top of wood block, 7½in vertical distance from bottom to top edge of cement pier, top edge is 8¼x8¼in wide, wood blocks are 5½x5½in wide. Another thing to keep in mind about these piers is that the wood blocks mounted on top tend to break and fall apart easily.
