Shipping containers are quite plentiful in the US & world wide nowadays and are very useful for making all sorts of buildings from personal or business office units to homes. Actually, from when i began this webpage the use of shipping containers has seemed to skyrocket in use as the basis for all sorts of dwellings. What has happened is skilled designers have began dedicating their talents to producing Gary Green incredible building designs with these simple boxes. ISBU is an acronym for: 'Intermodal Steel Building Unit' or Container Homes. And, ISO is an acronym for 'International Standards Organization' (International Organization for Standardization). ISO containers are used for the intermodal transport of freight. They are manufactured according to specifications from the International Standards Organization (ISO) and are suitable for multiple transportation methods such as truck and rail, or rail and ship. ISO containers are manufactured in many sizes. The standard width is 8ft. The most common lengths are 20 and 40 foot. Other lengths include 24, 28, 44, 45, 46, 53 and 56 foot. There are five common standard lengths, 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, 48ft, and 53ft. United States domestic standard containers are generally 48ft and 53ft (rail and truck). All ISO containers include a container safety certificate (CSC) issued by the manufacturer that must be renewed every 30 months by a certified inspector. If necessary, an approved continuous examination program (ACEP) can be used in place of this procedure. There are several basic types of ISO containers. Dry or cube containers are front loaded, completely enclosed and suitable for general-purpose transportation. Standard shipping containers are 8ft-6in tall (Note: These are the most common and are the ones used for building all kinds of structures). CONEX, is short for 'Container Express'. Close to where i live, there is a business which deals in industrial equipment and they sell used shipping containers, so i got to see first hand some containers they have modified or maybe i should say cut-up a little exposing some of the structure of the box. The steel sheet used appears to be fairly heavy to me, looks like almost 1/8th inch thick material and i shook the unit and it seemed pretty solid even with a big hole cut out of the side. I also noticed the cut-out section of the wood floor which looked like well over 1 inch thick of some kind of plywood perhaps. So, based on my personal observation, these boxes are pretty sturdy, lots of heavy material used to make them.

Also, Very Important Thing To Do . . .   Please do not give a deposit or cash payment to any of these businesses listed here without first doing your research on them and establishing some sort of assurance that they are going to fulfill their end of the deal.   1. The Penthouse
    THE PENTHOUSE   For those of you who would like to duplicate this type of building project using a shipping container as the base, take a look at this. It looks to me like a 20ft long x 8ft wide shipping container. Notice also the staircase along the right side of the container. I think this is located in Curlew Washington somewhere. There isn't much description here, but at least the picture gives you some idea as to what can be done . . . If you want. However, if you happen to live in a high wind area, i think i would reconsider the idea of not using guy wires to stabilize the structure.

    “However, it is much worse. I have a shipping container that weighs roughly 15k#, topped with a lightweight shed. We call it the "penthouse". The structure is ~18 FT high and only 8 FT wide . . . And the only thing holding it down is the mass of the container. Wind loads are pretty low, however . . . I have no guy wires, and it has been fine for at least two years now.”

At the date of this entry the "Project" link portion of their website is not working, so i cannot view their different projects. But, nice website anyway.

SHIPPING CONTAINER AS AN UNDERGROUND SHELTER   I have a great interest in underground building or underground small rooms and this video at least gives you some idea of what is involved with using a shipping container as an underground room. My interest in underground building is not for nuclear bomb protection, but as a means to escape the high temperatures being experienced in many places on the earth, like even Texas . . . Especially West Texas. Underground living in these very hot areas is really the solution to low cost temperature control. It is my understanding that at depth's of only 6 to 10 feet underground, the earth's temperature stabilizes at around a comfortable 54° to a high of 74° (approximately) regardless of the top side surface temperature which would create ideal sleeping conditions or just a place to cool off without using air conditioning. But of course the safety factor is a big issue and one that must be resolved first. Some ground areas are safe to dig without using any support system, while others require some level of a support system.

    “Final attempt to record building of an underground shelter using a 20 ft. shipping container. For those wondering why I didn't simply pile dirt over it without pouring a concrete cap first . . . These containers are mostly sheet metal. Heavy duty as it is, the roof and sides will push inwards from the weight. Eventually the metal will rust through and you'll be buried alive. My way will insure it is still there a few hundred years from now. Problem is, you'd better keep an eye on your sump pump. If it goes bad or loses power, you'll go in one day and find it the whole thing flooded. A surface alarm letting you know the water level is above where it should be isn't a bad idea. Putting the sump pump on a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is also a good thing.”

    TwoTimesTwentyFeet   This is a German based Shipping Container design business and their website consists mostly of pictures of their projects completed and projects on the board. So it seems to offer some fresh material, at least in the form of pictures anyway. I like the "Booking Office" link the best which shows some completed projects. Because these people are still working on this website (it's a work in progress), one big problem is the mixture of their boat making business with their shipping container projects and it is hard to locate and separate out the relevant material - at least it is for me. You will have to visit their "Bootsmanufaktur" page to view other very nice pictures of some completed projects. Look for the word "Container" or "Containerarchitekur" for more pictures.

  9. Cuban Conex Container Produce Stand
    CONEX VEGETABLE STAND   I ran across this article about small locally grown produce in the country of Cuba while searching for something else and thought it would be a good addition to Conex Connection. This is a good example of how someone could use shipping containers for selling locally grown produce, something which in my opinion needs to be done a lot more in the US. Actually, some of you who are unemployed might consider small time farming or container farming and selling produce to make some extra cash, maybe at a local farmers market, and don't get any ideas about growing pot, i'm talking about potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, kale, lettuce, squash, onions, radish & broccoli.

  13. tffnguy's rented shipping container being hauled away
    TFFN GUY   This is a little puff piece about the Terlingua area of West Texas where you will find very beautiful national park type scenery plus very low cost land for sale, and a number of people escaping trailer park living to live on their own little piece of heaven. People there live in all kinds of structures from buses to domes and in the picture at the right is a probably 20ft rented shipping container being removed from tffnguy's land where he used this $85 a month unit as a temporary home until his real home arrived: A fifth wheel trailer, much more comfortable according to him. But, because his shipping container was a rented unit, he could not make any alterations to the structure in order to make it more comfortable. For example, he could not cut out any holes for window placement. He had to present the container to the owner in it's original condition upon termination of his rental agreement. As far as i can tell he used 2X4 lumber and drywall to create walls and a standard entry way door for convenience. But all this material was removed before returning the container to the people who owned the container rental business. According to tffnguy, the inside of the container would get quite hot during warm days and quite cold during cool days, sort of like living on the moon, i guess. When visiting TFFN Guy's Blog, go to MONDAY, MAY 9, 2011 - Sump'ins Miss'in to view the part about removal of his rented container. There are some other pictures of his container living quarters in previous blog posts.

This particular container has been reinforced at it's corners with extra steel angles which are made from thick pieces of steel and it is nicely done also. Because this is a new type of shipping container which might have plenty of uses for holding most kinds of cargo. May not be good for heavy machinery, but good for most manufactured goods.   49. Bed by Night Container Units BED BY NIGHT   This is a German project in Germany using shipping containers for temporary homeless kid housing.

    “On 1 August 2002 in Hanover, the project was "bed by night" - a container facility for homeless young people officially opened - Hanoverian architect and professor at the University of Hannover, Han Slawik, had as part of a student design contest at the university plans to redevelop and extension of an existing container facility developed. The renovation was long overdue, since the old container had become the basis of age of repair and too narrow. After completing the six-month construction phase, the body can absorb the supply of street children now to operate on the Welfenplatz again. Since the temporary structure is intended to illustrate the transitory nature of "bed by night", have the planners and the city, the project deliberately turn for container decided. New - aside from the color - is that the extension allows the previously-story facility on two floors, now a division of sleep and daily containers venue. Has since 1996 "bed by night" for homeless children and young people sleeping in a living container on. Visitors have the opportunity to eat a shower, and wash their clothes. Construction costs for the plant amounted to some 300,000 euros, which were funded from donations.”

BILL GLENNON   Here in Part 1 the owner of this project gives an introduction into the start of this fairly large shipping container home project using containers as a basis for construction of a large dwelling which includes a food storage system. Containers are bolted and welded in places to attach together as a group. When complete there will 31 containers joined together with some wood on the outside and a stucco finish. There will be a flat roof with a windmill. There are four stories including a basement. The home will powered by 100% solar. Their goal is to heat the house for less than $1000.00 a year.
